Loskop Dam Nature Reserve Dehorning Operations 2025
At the start of September 2025, WeWild Africa teamed up with the Mpumalanga Tourism and Parks Agency (MTPA) and the Wildlife Emergency Fund (WEF) to perform maintenance dehorning on the rhino population at Loskop Dam. This crucial operation is part of our ongoing partnership to restore and expand Loskop into one of Southern Africa’s most iconic reserves and rewilding initiatives.
Our team this year was made up of seasoned professionals and trusted partners: Beverley Holden from DCM Surfaces and the Wildlife Emergency Fund (WEF), a long-time supporter of our work, joined us on the ground; Jana from Hope for Wildlife Helicopter Services flew the helicopter; and the Friends of Wildlife Management (FOWM) collaborated with the MTPA field team. Thanks to their expertise, each rhino was darted, dehorned, treated, and safely returned to its feet.
Removing horns is still one of the most effective ways to protect rhinos from poachers. Since horns regrow, the entire rhino population needs to be dehorned every 12–18 months. These regular maintenance operations have kept Loskop free from poaching incidents.
This work is part of the larger Loskop Rewilding and Expansion Project, which combines wildlife protection, habitat restoration, infrastructure improvements, and wildlife management. Read more about our Loskop Dam Project at wewildafrica.com.
