Overview of Lolelunga Game Ranch

Location and Size: Lolelunga Game Ranch is a 30,000-hectare private game reserve in Zambia. The area is fenced except for a 12 km stretch along the river, which remains open.

Conservation Efforts: Since 2020, the reserve has focused on conservation by removing snare wires (over 180 snares) and reintroducing indigenous species.

Community Engagement: The conservation project has created employment opportunities for the local community. Former poachers have been hired as conservationists, anti-poaching scouts, and rangers. The number of scouts has increased to 26, who patrol the reserve day and night.

Impact of Conservation

Reduction in Poaching: Initial high levels of poaching have been significantly reduced to almost zero, thanks to collaboration with local communities.

Infrastructure Development: Agreements with communities have led to the development of road networks for fire breaks, anti-poaching efforts, and species monitoring.

Transformation of Poachers: Several former poachers are now employed by the ranch, earning a salary and contributing to wildlife protection.

Community Health and Education Initiatives

Health Clinics: The ranch supports five local clinics by providing medical supplies quarterly.

Agricultural Support: Seasonal distribution of fertilizers to local communities.

Education: A secondary school is being built to reduce the distance children need to travel for higher education.

Reintroduction of Wildlife

Current Wildlife Population: The ranch is home to various species, such as wildebeests and sitatungas. The habitat remains intact, but predator populations need restoration to maintain ecological balance.

Cheetah Reintroduction Plan: Plans are underway to reintroduce cheetahs to regulate prey populations and prevent overgrazing. Two female and three male cheetahs from South Africa are expected within the year.

Significance for Zambia: This would be the first successful cheetah reintroduction in Zambia, potentially serving as a model for other protected areas in Zambia.

Future Prospects

Continued Collaboration: The project relies on ongoing anti-poaching efforts and support from the Zambian government, Department of National Parks and Wildlife, the Ministry of Tourism, and NGOs such as WeWild Africa and The Metapopulation Initiative.

Cheetah Breeding Ground: The goal is for Lolelunga Game Ranch to become a breeding ground for cheetahs, contributing to the repopulation of the species across Zambia.
